Our Evangelism & Home Missions Director:
From the Director:
Mark Mittelberg wrote in the May/June 2008 issue of Outreach Magazine”, “I could have presented all kinds of reasons for the Christian faith, but I might as well have been speaking a foreign language.” He goes on to write that people are following six faith paths:
• Relativistic faith path – truth flows out of whatever ideas a person decides to believe in;
• Traditional faith path – need to be taught to test their traditions, since many of the things we’ve been taught by our parents or culture might not be right;
• Authoritative faith path – need to understand that authorities can be wrong, and therefore should be trusted only if they prove to have trustworthy credentials and their ideas pass the tests of logic and evidence;
• Intuitive faith path – need to know that hunches and instincts can sometimes be helpful warning indicators, but that these often fail to give us clear and reliable directions about what we should trust and reply upon;
• Mystical faith path – encounter need to exercise caution, and learn to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (I John 4:1);
• Evidential faith path – which wields reason and evidence to cross-examine the conclusions reached through all of the other approaches, and to arrive at beliefs that are logical and that square with the facts.
What does this suggest? As we all know the times have changed. Jesus took people where they were and presented His gospel. In 2008, we must take the same approach. What works for one person may not work for another. What works at one place may not work at another. The work never changes, but the vehicle to communicate the word must be current and relevant. (Choosing Your Faith…In a World of Spiritual Options Tyndale).
